Chapter Thirteen

“What should we do with him?” Rob asked.

The wind swirled around them, a powerful burst of snow and cold that continued hammering at him. He wasn’t dressed for the cold, but he didn’t know if he even needed to be. The gray sky almost blended into the snow all around him.

The massive arctic cat kept his paws resting on the dragon mind, but there wasn’t any sign Yoral would do anything other than kill him or release him. Rob wasn’t exactly inclined to release him, not if he was going to attack them again, but he also didn’t have any interest in killing him. That left them in a tough spot.

“We should make him suffer how he made her suffer,” Yoral said.

“We should bring him with us,” Rob said.

His return to the Borderlands was long overdue. He spoke with Serena through the connection he had formed with her and told her what he was doing, but he had questions.

“It’s dangerous to bring one like this with us.”

Rob focused on the man. He felt the essence within him, but it was less than what he felt before. He had a connection to ice, but it was different.

“There’s someone I know who can hold him. And the others.”

He didn’t know if Maggie would appreciate him bringing others with him and worried she might be upset, but they needed answers. They were living servants of the ice king, neutralized as much as Rob could, and who might finally provide information.

“We need to bring them back,” he said to Yoral.

“It’s your choice,” Yoral said. “They’re your kind.”

Rob smiled to himself. His kind.

He wasn’t sure if they were his kind or not, but they were certainly connected to ice, which made them more his kind than any other kind. Rob motioned for Yoral to release the other dragon mind, and he wrapped ice around him.

“You’re going to have to make sure he doesn’t attack again,” he said to Yoral. “At least until we can get to the others.”

Yoral roared softly.

Rob lifted the other man and sent him staggering forward. His arms were bound at his sides, and the power within him was trapped so he couldn’t use it against them. They trudged back toward where they were first attacked, and Rob found the woman trying to crawl away. He added her to the others.

They made a strange procession as they crossed the land. Yoral loped alongside, with Rob sending the gliding energy beneath them, sliding them forward. It was easy to ensure they stayed with him by controlling where they were going. By the time they reached the edge of the Borderlands where the Spread built, he caught sight of another arctic cat.

The other arctic cat approached and snarled for a moment, circling around the three captives. “Dangerous,” he rumbled, surprising Rob.

Another dragon mind arctic cat?

“This is Dolash,” Yoral said.

Rob bowed to him. “It’s nice to meet you.” He looked at the others. “We didn’t have a choice.”

Dolash raised one massive icy claw and slashed at the dragon mind, knowing he was the most powerful of the three.
